Title: The why, what and how of quantum gravity (parts 1 and 2)
Abstract:
We will give an informal overview of the motivation and major research directions in quantum gravity (QG). Using some elementary back-of-the-envelope arguments, we will discuss why do we want to quantize gravity, what precisely do we mean by gravity and what by quantization, and how to actually perform this task. This will lead us to the so-called QG Zoo, which is a simplistic but illuminating classification of various research directions that aim to tackle the problem of QG. The talk will not involve any highly technical math, so it should also be accesible to students and non-experts.
