Lecture abstract

Time:   7. March 2016
Place:   Faculty of Physics
Title:   A modern review of results and open questions of classical and quantum gravity
Abstract:
General theory of relativity, since its initial formulation 100 years ago until today, does not stop to amaze with its elegance and deep insight into the structure of space, time and gravity. From the first predictions of bending of light and perihelion precession of Mercury, to the experimental detection of gravitational waves last month, GR is one of the most successful physical theories overall.

After a review of the structure and the most interesting predictions of general relativity, we will discuss some open questions of the modern theory of gravity, from the modern discoveries in cosmology and astrophysics, to the attempts to formulate a quantum theory of the gravitational field.
